Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Commercial Analyst has their fingers on the pulse of the business, analyzing data from internal and external sources, designing reports and dashboards, and acting as the primary support for Operations’, Sales, and Marketing to enhance their ability to make informed business decisions by providing and articulating data-driven insights and market trends.


This role will require someone with strong technical skills, a solid understanding of financial principals, and an above average analytical mindset to pull together various types of data to identify macro and micro trends, market and operational opportunities, shifts in consumer preferences, new product opportunities, and internal improvements to drive higher margins.


The selected candidate will be a strategic resource integral in establishing and reporting on key performance indicators, defining and executing a formal business opportunity assessment process, and taking a lead role in drafting of the annual budget and monthly forecasts.


Primary responsibilities:

Analytics

  1. Understand & make necessary recommendations on how proposed projects and strategies will impact the business tied back to market development & differentiation in support of business strategy.

  2. Perform market analysis to determine penetration levels across all product offerings, recommend marketing opportunities, and develop reporting dashboards to highlight business activity.

  3. Proactively identify trends and data that support recommendations and innovations to improve operational results, processes, and drive effectiveness.

  4. Perform TCO (total cost of offering) analysis on all services offered and provide recommendations on improvements to overall profitability.

  5. Work with department heads to establish KPI’s and generate recurring reporting (scorecards / dashboards / etc.) for key programs.

  6. Provide market insights to executive leadership team via weekly newsletter


Technical

  1. Develop and maintain datasets used for the development of recurring reporting to support sales, marketing, and operations.

  2. Work with IT to develop new data sources and identify enhancements that will improve the level and quality of analysis.

  3. Participate in meetings to gather requirements and make recommendations around reporting / BI solutions.


Planning

  1. Provide analysis to support mid & long-range financial planning of product strategies, gross margins and operational expenses.

  2. Gain an in-depth knowledge of program cost structure to develop robust gross margin budgets and forecasts.

  3. Develop forecast accuracy and sensitivity models to assess risk and provide a range of expected outcomes to drive decision making.


What you bring to the table
  1. Bachelor’s degree in quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Finance)

  2. MBA or pursuit of CPA

  3. Minimum 3 years in a prior analytical type role

  4. Practical experience understanding the link between business issues and P&L/Cash Flow

  5. Working knowledge of BI and data warehouse concepts and terminology

  6. Advanced Excel skills including advanced formulas, macros, and pivots

  7. Strong SQL literacy and understanding of database structures

  8. Self-motivated and able to work independently

  9. Capable of prioritizing multiple projects while still achieving deadlines

  10. Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to connect the dots and tell stories using data

  11. Detail-oriented person who is passionate about quality and enthusiastic about new technology


Bonus points
  1. MS Access experience (building databases / developing queries) an asset

  2. Experience building reports in Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, BOBJ or similar platforms an asset
